The fish and the catch
Cod is one of the commonest and most economically significant of Norway's saltwater fishes. We differentiate between migrating pelagic cod and stationary coastal cod. Coastal cod is a bottom fish. The spawning cod - Norwegian Arctic cod - is Norway's most important stock. It lives most of its life in the Barents sea , but migrates both as an immature capelin cod (spring cod) and as a mature spawning cod. Its spawning grounds stratch from the Lofoten archipelago in the north to Stad on the southwest coast, but its primary spawning areas are in Vestfjord and the coast of Møre og Romsdal county. The Norwegian Arctic cods' migratory spawning routes continue to form the basis for our prime seasonal fisheries - the famous cod fishing in Lofoten. It is also caught with trawl nets in the Barents Sea.

As a result of a dramatic reduction in the spawning stock of Norwegian-Arctic cod in the past few years, stringent limits have been imposed on cod fishing. This appears to have succeeded; in the beginning of 1992, researchers estimated the spawning stock at about 1 million tonnes, the most in over 40 years. North Sea cod fishing is carried out year-round, and cod is another one of many commercial species to be caught secondarily. Research and development has made headway toward the establishment of cod farming and sea ranching.

Nutritional content
Cod is primarily an excellent protein source, but it also contains a lot of vitamin B12 and selenium, and a healthy ratio of potassium to sodium.
